Karate may be defined as a weaponless means of self defense. It consists of dynamic offensive and defensive techniques using all parts of the body to their maximum advantage.
Karate practice is divided into:
Kihon (drilling of stances, blocks, punches, strikes and kicks)
Kata (pre-arranged forms simulating combat situations)
Kumite (sparring)
In each category, the beginner is given instruction at the most basic level until the techniques become spontaneous. As the student progresses technically, he or she progresses physically as well, and advanced practices demand greater stamina. At this stage, the student becomes involved with more intricate and difficult katas and more dynamic forms of kumite. As the student approaches black belt level, technique, stamina, speed, and coordination become natural as a result of strong practice. It is at this stage that the serious student discovers that his or her study of karate has only just begun. The object of true karate practice is the perfection of oneself through the perfection of the art.
Karate as self-defense
Karate is one of the most dynamic of all the martial arts. A trained karateka is able to coordinate mind and body perfectly, thereby allowing the unleashing of tremendous physical power at will. Therefore, it is not the possession of great physical strength that makes a strong karateka; rather it is the ability to coordinate mind and body. Upon developing this ability, even the smallest person finds that he or she has within himself or herself the power to deliver a devastating blow to any would-be attacker.
The benefits of karate
In our everyday lives we often forget the value of exercise to both our physical and mental health. The practice of karate tones the body, develops coordination, quickens reflexes, and builds stamina.
Also, the serious practice of karate develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into one’s mental capabilities, and more self-confidence. In this, karate is not an end, but a means to an end. It is an activity in which advancing age is not a hindrance. Rather it encourages proficiency in the keen coordination of mind and body.
How Does Martial Arts Impact Your Child?
Karate is one of the most popular self-defense systems for women in the world.
Attending karate class means you’ll be learning for 12 hours over two to three days. In the first part of the course you talk about techniques, both physical and verbal, that will help you defend yourself against an attacker.
The instructor will teach you how to avoid dangerous situations that might land you in trouble. Then they teach the basics of self-defense, what kind of postures to use and even cover using personal belongings as weapons.
In the second part of the course you learn the basic moves that you’ll be using to defend yourself. This is where you actually learn how to hit an attacker and get out of different holds. In the next part of the course you’ll actually apply that knowledge.
During the third part of the course the instructor dons a full-body protective suit and you actually get to try out some of your new moves on them. You can practice shouting at them to get away, hitting them and getting out of holds.

Improvement of physical health
The obvious benefit from learning karate is the improvement of physical health. The student learns to exercise regularly several times a week, which is one of the most useful lifetime habits. This results in balancing blood pressure and circulation, lowering the cholesterol level, and reducing the number of visits to the doctor and all medical expenses. Moreover the student gets flexible muscles and joints, which increases the chances for surviving car accidents with fewer injuries when compared to a person who does not train karate.
Improvement of mental health
A little less obvious benefit from learning karate is the improvement of mental health. Imagine yourself on a beautiful beach with palm trees, or breathing the fresh mountain air while enjoying the beauty of a mountain lake. Without any psychological stress you simply feel light and your muscles relaxed – at that moment you feel the freedom to sense the beautiful things in life. Everybody has this state of mind firmly coded and permanently stored in his or her memory. After two hours of exhaustive karate workout the student feels totally spent; all muscles and the entire body get relaxed, which in turn brings back from the memory the firmly coded stress-free state of mind. This is one of the greatest gifts of Nature – a mechanism of recycling psychological stress through exercising. Whenever the student is pushed by the sensei to the limit, he uses 100% of his mental concentration just to keep going. The real benefit comes from realizing that when you commit 100% of your concentration you get results more efficiently and faster which sets you free to take on the next task at hand, to achieve more.
Building self-esteem and strengthening self-confidence
Building self-esteem and confidence is based on the fact that the students sets a goal, puts his mind on it, does whatever it takes, achieves the goal and at the end gets promoted to the next belt. In a nutshell that is the formula for success in life. The student sets a goal to become a black belt. A journey of thousand miles can be walked through step by step. The sensei splits the long-term goal into number of short-term goals – the color belts. Once the goal is set, the mind calls for behavioral changes – it shifts the attention, initiates action, and applies persistently effort in organized and disciplined manner. Progress in karate is measured with the belt ranking system. After each belt test the student receives feedback from the examiners – he learns about his strong and his week points, and receives carefully selected directions for further growth as a martial artist. Each belt is an award for a completed short-term goal that frees the mind and opens the horizon for the completion of the next goal. That is the moment when the student realizes that he managed to succeed despite the difficult odds and almost overwhelming circumstances, which in turn is the psychological food for growing confidence and self-esteem. That is the moment when the student grows more confident with his self-defense skills, when his self-esteem elevates to the awareness that:
Goals give purpose and direction in life,
Achievement of goals is the measure for success in life,
Almost any goal can be achieved with a good plan, strong discipline and proper actions,
Constructive feedback or a well-deserved award is the mechanism that brings a feeling of satisfaction and reinforces the patterns that bring success.
Learning and mastering self-defense techniques
The psychological wealth of mastering self defense techniques is in knowing that you have whatever it takes to defend yourself whenever it is necessary, which brings a feeling of confidence and piece of mind.

The Way We See It
Seek perfection of character - This is the overall goal of karate. To accomplish it, you must apply your training to your life. When training always follow proper principles. Emphasize not only physical improvement. if you follow proper priniciples you acquire experience that you can apply to everything else.
Be faithful - Keep to proper direction. Keep on track. The seeking of truth and fairness is equivalent to seeking the essence of character. Proper technique and action must be based in proper thinking. Develop yourself inside, don't worry about appearances, be true to yourself. As for your attitude and performance, have an open mind, be humble, never forget your responsibilities which are base on your rank. Technique and character reflect the image of karate.
Endeavor - Maintain constant effort. " Practice make perfect" Hard work underlies the improvement principles - " no pain, no gain". Seek extra stimulation for extra improvement. Seek deeper and higher levels of understanding. Overcome your weakness and learn self-control. Learn your limitations. The quality of the process is important, not only result. Continuous effort is power. Be patient: don't want too much, do everything step-by-step.
Respect others -Live together and improve together. We benefit from cooperation. group spirit helps the individual keep going. Cooperation means training each other The bow is a symbol of respect. It strengthens relationships. Control selfishness, don't get a big head. Respect other dojo's and systems - we will benefit from mutual respects & co-operations.
Regrain from violent behaviur - Show confidence. Learn self-control and proper application of energy. Control a hot temper. Use technique, not just energy.
The Nijukun (20 precepts)
Karate is not only dojo training.
In Karate, never attack first.
Don't forget that Karate begins with a bow and ends with a bow.
One who practices Karate must follow the way of justice.
First you must know yourself. Then you can know others.
Spiritual development is paramount; technical skills are merely means to the end.
You must release your mind.
Misfortune comes out of laziness.
Karate is a lifelong training.
Put Karate into everything you do.
Karate is like hot water. If you do not give heat constantly it will again become cold.
Do not think you have to win. Think that you do not have to lose.
Victory depends on your ability to tell vulnerable points from invulnerable ones.
Move according to your opponent.
Consider your opponent's hands and legs as you would sharp swords.
When you leave home, think that millions of opponents are waiting for you.
Ready position for beginners and natural position for advanced students.
Kata is one thing. Engaging in a real fight is another.
Do not forget (1)strength and weakness of power, (2)expansion and contraction of the body, (3)slowness and speed of techniques. [Click here for Master Teruyuki Okazaki's analysis of this precept]
